What should I do if my shower tap is leaking?

So, your shower is leaking (or you think it may be leaking). It may be a small leak, a large leak, a short-term situation or a long-term problem that has been going on for ages. Irrelevant of the circumstances, your shower is leaking and it is a messy pain.

Shower Leaking

What should you do? What causes a shower leak? Where can a shower leak from? We answer these questions, and more, below. If you need further help though, give Mastercraft Tiling & Bathroom Renovations a call on 0435 243 235 for assistance.

Where can a shower leak?

A shower can leak from a variety of places including:

  • Shower hob.
  • Taps.
  • Shower screen.
  • Shower head.
  • Grout.
  • Waterproofing.

What causes a shower tap to leak?

There are a huge range of reasons as to why your shower could be leaking and we have listed some of the most common below.

Poor plumbing

Some of the pipes and plumbing that is needed by your shower can be found behind the shower wall. If this hasn’t been installed correctly or has a leak, this can cause your shower to leak too.

Cleaning products

Harsh cleaning products can both wear away at the waterproofer, as well as the shower materials, if used consistently. Always check what is in your cleaning products and do your research (and speak to a professional) before using anything!

Movement of your home

It is well documented that the ground moves over time and therefore, your home moves too. This movement is very slight but builds as time goes on, causing different cracks and irregular levelling in homes. It can also cause your shower to leak as well!

Poor tiling

If the tiling in your bathroom wasn’t completed correctly, or it was sealed poorly, this can result in shower leakages in varying areas of your bathroom.

Poor waterproofing

If the waterproofing membrane in your bathroom was not installed correctly, or has a hole, this can cause a shower to leak in a variety of places.

Over time and from usage, buildings can warp and change which causes gaps. Gaps = leaks!

Low grade materials

Last, but certainly not least, if low quality materials have been used to build your bathroom/shower you will find shower leakage more often than not. These materials are not made to last and you will be left with damage and leaking that requires extensive fixing/renovating.

How can I tell if my shower is leaking?

There are a few signs and symptoms that give away that your shower is leaking, such as:

  • Warping or damage to walls, such as water stains.
  • Bubbles in paint.
  • Bathroom tiles becoming loose.
  • Grout missing or starting to degrade.
  • The smell of mildew and/or rotting wood.
  • If your bathroom door keeps jamming, this may be caused by the wood expanding (which is another sign of a shower leak!).

What should I do if my shower tap is leaking?

Call a professional! As you can see, leaking showers are caused by a huge variety of things (there can even be more than one problem) so it is always best to call in an industry expert. Many instances of showers leaking result in partial or full bathroom renovations - which Mastercraft Tiling & Bathroom Renovations can assist with! Give us a call on 0435 243 235 and we would be more than happy to assist further.
